About 1 in 6 people face infertility at some point, and in roughly half of couples a male factor is involved. A low sperm count usually causes no symptoms, so many men only find out when pregnancy does not happen. A home test is a private first step.

What a home sperm test shows

The test checks whether sperm concentration reaches 15 million per millilitre – the reference value for normal concentration. The result is ready in 5 minutes.

  • Normal result: concentration is at or above the reference value.
  • Low result: concentration is below the reference value – repeat the test or see a doctor for a semen analysis.

What it does not show

The home test does not assess sperm motility, shape or semen volume. A full picture comes only from a semen analysis (spermogram) in a laboratory, which a doctor will order if needed.

How to get a reliable result

  • abstain from ejaculation for 2–7 days before the test
  • collect the whole sample into the cup provided and follow the timing in the leaflet
  • sperm take about 2–3 months to mature, so after lifestyle changes or illness repeat the test after 3 months – the pack contains 2 tests

What affects sperm count

  • smoking, alcohol and recreational drugs
  • overweight
  • overheating: saunas, hot baths, a laptop on the lap
  • some medicines, anabolic steroids, recent fever or illness

When to see a doctor

  • pregnancy has not happened after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse (after 6 months if the woman is 35 or older)
  • the home test result is low
  • there is pain, swelling or a lump in the testicles, or erection or ejaculation problems

It also helps to check the female side: ovulation tests show the most fertile days.

Rapid tests are intended for preliminary screening and do not replace a doctor's consultation.
